Each month, I introduce a new character trait to the students. In September it was Respect and now in October it is Responsibility. For the 2nd and 3rd graders, I did a classroom led discussion on different responsibilities they have. We talked about what responsibilities they have at home, at school, to themselves, and to the environment. At Home and At School seemed to be the easiest. However, the one that was the most difficult was the To Myself. It was hard for them to understand until I explained it as taking care of your body and mind.

Handout that is given to all students so they can follow a long and write what is being said.

When we were finished with the activity the whole page was covered with different jobs, actions, and behaviors that described their responsibilities. One student commented on how many things (responsibilities) they need to do everyday and that you would think it would be hard but it really isn't. I loved to hear that student's insight!

Update:

For the 1st graders, I printed out responsibilities and had them place them where they were supposed to go on the white board.

The final activity of the lesson a responsibility coloring sheet from Doodle Art Alley.
